Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver

A great start, 14.02.2010

After Magdalena Neuner in the biathlon on Saturday, speed skater Stephanie Beckert brought home the second silver medal on Sunday. Felix Loch and David Möller finished the weekend off in perfect style with gold and silver in the luge. Meanwhile, the polyclinics in Vancouver and Whistler have seen lively demand for Bauerfeind knee and back products in particular.

"Snowboarders, mogul skiers and ice-hockey players especially are coming regularly to us," reported Christian Laimann. The orthotist has been working for Bauerfeind in the polyclinic of the Olympic village in Vancouver since February 4. He and his French colleague Cyril Lefevre have already given out more than 60 supplies. The most demand is for products for the knee and back. Athletes are particularly exposed to extreme stresses in freestyle skiing and snowboarding. "That's when earlier injuries begin to cause problems or an athlete overdoes things," explained Cyril Lefevre.

The Bauerfeind orthotist can also customize equipment thanks to a sewing machine. Supports, for instance, are fitted with straps to prevent the joint concerned being stretched fully. The athlete can continue to train and make it to the start line.

The sewing machine is doing sterling work in Whistler, too – albeit not always for orthotic purposes. Lugers asked the Bauerfeind team to sew their vests with the start numbers a little tighter. In the luge, after all, it comes down to thousandths of a second.
Felix Loch and David Möller put the seal on the weekend with their double success in the luge after biathlete Magdalena Neuner and speed skater Stephanie Beckert had carried off the first medals.

The mood Sunday evening in the German House in Vancouver and in the Whistler center, where the medal winners were presented and celebrated, was correspondingly positive. Bauerfeind's orthotic service station in Vancouver has been open since Thursday. It is available to guests of the House as well as athletes. The first few days saw a particular requirement for loosening massages in addition to supports, orthoses and compression stockings.
