Supplies from Zeulenroda: back and knee products for the Olympics, 19.02.2010

With less than a week to go before the end of the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver and Whistler, more supports and orthoses have been ordered from Bauerfeind AG based in Zeulenroda/Thuringia, Germany. The polyclinics in the Olympic villages are experiencing particularly lively demand especially for products for the knees and back. This is where Bauerfeind teams are helping to support injured athletes and equip them with the German-made products.

Spectacular falls on the pistes and in the halfpipe are just as much part of everyday Olympic sporting life as tough duels in the ice hockey stadium. That keeps the physicians and physios in the polyclinics of the Olympic villages correspondingly busy. They are treating fresh injuries suffered by the athletes as well as old ones that keep reoccurring due to excessive strains. And that's where supports and orthoses from Zeulenroda/Thuringia come in. As a "Friend of the Games", Bauerfeind AG has staff on site to help support injured athletes and equip them with quality products "Made in Germany".

"We want our service to be 100% available right up to the end of the Games. That's why we have ordered more of the most in-demand products in the most common sizes from Zeulenroda," explained Lars Birnbaum, Olympics project manager at Bauerfeind.

Snowboarders, mogul skiers and ice-hockey players in particular are coming to the polyclinics with knee and back problems. But short-track athletes, figure skaters and skiers are also among the patients. Quite apart from problems with the back and knees, Olympians from all over the world are suffering damaged shoulders and elbows, injured thumbs, torn thigh muscles or unstable ankles. The breadth of the Bauerfeind supports and orthoses that are available is just as great as the breadth of injuries. "Our products alleviate pain, offer relief and stabilize the affected areas. They provide mobility and ultimately enable the athletes to remain in the competition," said Lars Birnbaum of the effect of the Bauerfeind products, which have won multiple international awards for their material and design.

The medical compression stockings offered by Bauerfeind are also becoming increasingly popular with the athletes. They exert a certain pressure at precisely defined points of the leg and ensure that the blood in the legs does not clot. That helps to prevent the dreaded deep-vein thrombosis when flying and on long journeys, for instance. But the athletes also enjoy wearing the "VenoTrain sport" model to accelerate their regeneration after strenuous training and competition sessions.
